We have been renting the Triangle Crab Max trap for ten years. CLICK HERE to see Crabs caught using this type of Trap.

The Triangle Crab Max type of traps has a netting area is a square 15″ X 15″ = 225 sq inches of netting area.

We no longer rent or sell the Crab Max Triangle Trap, but the new Round Crab Max Trap because it catches more Crab with it large catching area.

We charge the same rates for the new and improved Round Crb Max Traps as the Triangle Crab Max Traps.

A new Crab Max Round is being introduced during the Spring Break.

It has:

  • More Crab Netting Area
  • Attracted more Crabs with more bail on the longer Chicken Spike

The difference is in the netting area.

Both traps are 24″ on the base, but the Round Crab Max has 50% more catching area because it is round and not a triangle.

Picture of the Crab Max. Original and the Crab Max 3.0.

Original Triangle Crab Max

Area of square = width X height …. Crab Max when folded out make square width = 17 …height =17 …… 17x 17 = 289 sq inches crab catching area

The Round Crab Max

You do the Math

Area of circle = radius X radius X 3,1417 …. Round Crab Max when folded out, makes a circle with a radius of 12 ….12 X 12 X 3.1417 = 452 sq inches

Area of square = width X height …. Crab Max Traingke when folded out make square width = 17 …height =17…… 17 x 17 = 289 sq inches

Circle Area minus Square Area (452-289)=163 inches increase and 163/289 = 56% more than a 50% increase

Both are built on a 24-inch axle; the netting is different, but the Round Crab Max is Stronger and Better

Stronger and Better

  • The Round Crab Max uses .125 Stainless Steel instead of .091 steel. The .125 enables the Round Crab Max to be a circle instead of a triangle making it stronger to hold more Crabs.
  • When any spring-loaded trap is not in use, it springs open. The Round Crab Max has a small holder that can be used to hold the trap together whenever the trap is not in use, making it easier to carry.
  • Hand-Line to Fishing Snap Breaking Strength increased to 300 lbs instead of 100 lbs.
  • The Breaking Strength from the Fishing Snap to Swivel increased to 220 lbs.
  • The breaking strength from Swivel to trap has been increased to 400 lbs.

The clinics are conducted in Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, or Newport. The location will be changed depending on the rains, tides, weather, and the number of people registered.

Any time is a good time for Crab, but some are better than others.

“Slack Water” also called “Slack Tide” (the times of peak high or low tide) are the best times to crab. During swift tidal exchanges crab often bury themselves, but at slack water, more crabs are walking around foraging, since they are less affected by tidal currents.

SLICK TIDE

The favorite time to harvest crab is roughly the one-hour time slot before low or high tide and one hour after low or high tide. At that time the tide is moving the slowest, allowing the crabs, to roam around and look for food without needing to fight the current, but crabs can be trapped at any time of day.

The State of Oregon is offering residents and visitors the opportunity to explore and experience fishing, crabbing, and clamming without the need for a license or tags on specific listed dates throughout the year.

Crabbing on the shore of Siletz Bay

Crab Trapper will be Demonstrated at Clinic

The Crab Trapper consists of two metal netted 12″ sides. When lying flat, it sort of the takes the shape of a square circle 22″ X 30″. It is a Crab Trap that can be used from the beach. Since it is the small, it is excellent for children to use from a dock. It can also be used from a kayak, Crab-Cat or boat with limited space.

When pulled, the two sides lift up, creating walls and pushing all the crabs to the center.

.

The Crab Trapper is made locally in Lincoln City, Oregon and can be purchased for $50 include a bucket and Crab Gauge.

Folding crab traps are a recent innovation that is changing the face of crabbing from the beach or the shore in Siletz Bay.

Bait

Any bait will work. A lot of people use chicken. Fish guts are a good one. Things that are natural to crabs seem to do better. This includes using fish carcasses, squid, clams, and the like.

Using these baits has a downside in that seals seem to love them more than the crab. The Crab Trapper uses a bait bag that will keep the seals at bay. It will also help to keep the crab on your bait longer.

Crab Trapper Bait Bag

If a crab pulls off a nice piece of your bait, more than likely, it’ll crawl off and eat it. So something to stop them from tearing off chunks will improve your odds when using the Crab Trapper.

The bait bag is the key. For starters, this eliminates tying bait to the bottom of the trap, which never seemed to work very well anyway. This is especially nice if you are dealing with some rancid bait-like fish parts. Just toss them in and clip it shut.

Bait bags prevent the crabs from completely devouring the bait all at once. They are open enough to allow for little bites here and there to keep the crabs happy but closed enough to keep your bait working all day long. It is more effective to stand the bait bags upright, as this maximizes floor space.

Gloves
Gloves prevent jellyfish stings from tentacles wrapped around your rope, along with alleviating some of the pain that comes with handling crabs.

Sorting Crabs
Quickly sort through the crabs, being careful not to break crab legs or get your fingers pinched. An experienced crab handler will sort crabs by keeping them at ease. They want to get out, but they don’t want to be forcefully grabbed. A quick shake of the pot is often more effective than reaching directly for them.

Be sure to carefully and quickly release crab, do not throw them from heights as this will often crack their carapace and kill them.

REGULATION

Crabs may be taken using crab rings, pots, or baited line (limited to 3 rings, pots, or lines per license) by hand; dip net, or rake. Pots may be left overnight.
Bays, estuaries, beaches, tide pools, piers, and jetties are open all year. The ocean is closed for Dungeness crab from October 16 through November 30.
No more than 1 daily catch limit per day may be taken per person. No more than 2 daily catch limits per person may be in possession.
The minimum size for Dungeness crab is 5 ¾ inches. Size is measured in a straight line across the back immediately in front of, but NOT including the widest points.

Undersized male, female, and unwanted red rock crab must be immediately released unharmed.
Crabs may not be mutilated so that sex, size, or species cannot be determined prior to landing. Mutilated crabs may not be transported across state waters.
No holding pots, holding devices, or live boxes are allowed in the ocean. Holding pots, holding devices, or live boxes in bays and estuaries cannot retain more than 24 Dungeness and 48 red rock crab per container.
