Where can you spend $50 and have an activity for kids for 24 hours?
Crabbing is a fun and easy activity for the entire family. It’s a great way to get outside and catch some dinner while burning some energy, enjoying the fresh air, and taking in the scenery of the glorious coast.

Crabbing requires patience and persistence and meditatively affects kids and adults alike.
. There is nothing like taking a bucket of crab back to your unit or, better yet, having it cleaned, cooked, and ready to be dipped in warm butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon!
Crabbing is great for our mental health, like fishing, because you spend time outside, surrounded by nature, water, and sand. Exposing our kids to outdoor activities that reduce stress and anxiety.

Treasure these moments from all the noise and crabbing together, a great way to relax as a family. It’s also a great way for kids to know, respect, and appreciate where their food comes from. It connects them to our planet and makes them want to protect it for themselves and the animals that share it with us.

In Oregon, the most abundant crab is the Dungeness crab. Crabbing is popular along the Bays and up and down the Coast. While it may sound simple enough to go out and catch dinner, it’s important to understand local laws and regulations, as they can change yearly.
Here are some basic supplies that you’ll need to get started crabbing, but all but the gloves and ice chest can be rented
You can catch a lot more crabs when you use a crab trap. Crabs are lured into a trap with bait. We use the Round Crab Max.
How to handle crab
Don’t get pinched! Safety always comes first when handling crab—both your safety and the safety of the crab. Crab handling is important; caution can spare you from a painful pinch. Once you have a good grip on the center of the crab, you can pick it up without getting pinched. Hold it firmly but not so hard that it damages the shell. Wearing gloves is the safest option.

Benefits of crabbing
Opportunities for play for the kids are endless near the beach. Not everyone has to participate in the crabbing; there are always plenty of other things to do, such as digging sand holes, running through sand dunes, and simply enjoying our time together as a family. It is a great activity that will leave your family with countless memories for years to come.
But where can you have a vacation with your children and spend the entire day on the beach, have fun catching Crabs for under $50, and then eat the Crabs for Dinner?

What is our secret?
Two things

Siletz Bay is a large Bay one (1) mile south of Lincoln City in Taft.
All the Crab entering the Bay must go through a narrow channel.
This is the Crab Trap we use. Since it is string-loaded, it lays flat like a circle-ring trap, but when it is pulled, it closes like a crab shell.
The picture on the left is after it pulled with Crab.

Children as young as eight (8) standing on the beach, armed with our specially built Crab Trapper, can throw the trap into the narrow channel.
They throw like they are lassoing something.
They will catch some Crab every 5 – 8 minutes.
