The main difference between soft-shell and hard-shell crabs is their stage of maturity. Soft-shell crabs are caught right after molting when their shells are still soft and pliable, while hard-shell crabs are fully grown and have a hard outer shell. One gets 12%-15% more meat with a hard shell crab, but the meat is the same.
If you catch your crab during the month whose name ends with the letter “R,” they will nearly all have a hard shell. This is why they say the best time for crabs is fall.
In terms of cooking, soft-shell crabs can be eaten whole, while hard-shell crabs need to be cracked open to access the meat. Soft-shell crabs are often breaded and fried, while hard-shell crabs can be cooked in various ways, such as steaming, boiling, or baking.
In terms of taste and texture, soft-shell crabs are known for their tender and delicate meat, while hard-shell crabs have a firmer texture. However, both crabs have a sweet and briny flavor that seafood lovers love.
.SLACK TIDE ……. When the tide is not coming in or going out is the best time to crab, or if there is not much difference between HIGH TIDE and LOW TIDE, For example, if the difference is only 2 ft, any time is a good time to crab. CLICK HERE TO SEE TIDE TABLES.

.
NO fRESH WATER ….. When it rains upstream, the bays fill with fresh water, and the crabs retreat to the salty ocean since they are saltwater creatures. During the summer, we can go for 90 days without rain. Then, anytime is a good time to crab in the bays.

Crabbing with a Drone is an exciting new method for shore-based crabbers. In Oregon, one can crab for the shore in the ocean 365 days a year.
Commercial Crabbers (who use boats) are limited when they can crab, but we are not limited by a drone.
\With 360 miles of beaches, the crabber is not limited to just Crabbing in Siletz Bay. We will demonstrate drone crabbing in the bay for the convenience of the public, not as a method of Bay crabbing.

The increased distance a drone can achieve will lead to more supply, better crabs, less time, and less bait wasted. Imagine casting your bait out from the beach for hundreds of feet and dropping it right into a hole full of crabs.
The picture shows a drone taking a crab trap to be dropped 300 ft from the beach.
This method is being developed by the Sustainable Living Center of Oregon, based in Lincoln City, Oregon. The Center finds ways to live sustainably and with quality in these challenging times.
We are an Education and Research Center based in Lincoln City, Oregon. The Center uses Permaculture, Off-Grid techniques, and Technology to find DO IT YOUR SELF (DIY) methods of food production, water harvesting, energy production, shelter, community building, and health (keto lifestyle)
The Center is financially sustainable because it rents kayaks and boats, sells crab traps and bait barrels, offers DIY workshops, fish smoking, and food canning services, and owns our property of commercial land on the Siletz River at Hwy 101 and Rt 124.
Drone Crabbing is our latest effort to find a sustainable food supply. If there is a break in the food supply chain, whether through EMP, war, Tusumi, political unrest, strikes, pandemic, no fuel for the crab boats, etc., if you have the right kind of crab trap and a drone (that can be charged by solar), you would be able to supply your loved ones with food 365 days a year from the ocean.
