In 2008, the Sustainable Living Center purchased 90 acres in Siletz, Oregon, and started raising chickens. Twenty chickens were bought and let to free range in the pasture and locked up at night. Over the next four (4) years, all chickens were killed by raccoons, chicken hawks, coyotes, or other creatures.
This loss started the search for a method to have raise pasture-raised eggs without losing any chickens. Finally, after ten years of research, the Chicken Sanctuary is our solution. We now have pasture-raised eggs without losing chicken while on the bank of the Siletz river.
One (1) dozen eggs per week ………. $100/month
Two (2) dozen eggs per week …….. $200/month
Three (3) dozen eggs per week …… $300/month
The minimum rental period is three months, and 50% of the rental can be applied to ownership.
If chickens do not meet their weekly eggs requirement, the Sustainable Living Center will supply any egg shortage or replace the chickens.
Daytime Chicken Play Pen is a Dome where the chickens find their free-range diet of seeds, green plants, insects, and worms,
9.7 feet wide and 5 feet high with 74 square feet of run and grass area. The dome is light and can be lifted comfortably by one person because it is made out of PVC pipe and covered with deer netting. As a result, you never have to clean the chicken coop, or move it.
The Dome, with its deer netting, is not meant to protect the chickens from raccoons, coyotes or weasels but from chicken hawks, eagles or the neighbor’s dog.
Free Range Diet
The Chicken Dome offers all the advantages of a chicken pasture-raised diet with protection from predators.
Diet is what makes the yolk of the eggs dark yellow.
The Dome is move to new place every few days, which gives the chickens the benefits of a Free Range Diet without danger.
The chicken run area can be cleaned by moving the Dome. The chicken poop fertilizes the yard under the Dome.
The Roosting Cube
It is a 4’ X 4’ X 4’ solid plastic 1/4 inch walled cube. The plastic bottom floor is replaced with a wire floor. This is so that the chicken’s waste will fall on the ground instead of the cube’s base and never have to be cleaned—the chicken poop just fertilizer the yard under the Dome.
The Chicken Feeder
This feeder is designed to be placed outside the roosting chicken cube. It eliminates feed mess and waste. When elevated to a comfortable height for your chicken, this feeder has no scat, clean and poop free.
Three-day clean water system
The Nipples are spring-loaded, so they must be pushed to release the water and boast no leaks, provided they are installed correctly. Water pressure can only handle anywhere from 1 to 8 psi.
Horizontal watering nipples are designed for birds eight days old and up. What sets them apart: they don’t drip, and because no water is stored in the nipple unit even when your bucket or drinker is full of water, they won’t freeze during the winter.
The Egg’s nest is mounted on the outside of the Roosting Cube. Therefore, the eggs can be removed from outside of the Roosting Cube.
Why is our pasture raised system?

According to Mother Earth News. (Oct – Nov 2007 issue) Six eggs from each of 14 flocks that had access to a free range natural diet—made up of all kinds of seeds, green plants, insects and worms, were tested by an accredited laboratory in Portland, Ore. The results showed that when compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs the average nutrient content of the samples currently sold in supermarkets are nutritionally inferior to eggs produced by hens raised on pasture.
(USDA) nutrient data for eggs from hens raised on pasture contain:
Does eating eggs cause weight loss and improve your health?
One of the directors of the Sustainable Living Center started the Keto Lifestyle in May of 2021. Our Chickens Chicken Sanctuary eggs program has been a large part of his new lifestyle. He has been eating up to 4 eggs/per day for the last 21 months. As a result, he has lost over 110 lbs and has never been hungry.
In March of 2022, at his annual blood tests, he had reduced his blood pressure by 20 points, reduced his A1C from 6.3 to 5.3, lowered his cholesterol, and his PSA was 2.34. In March of 2023, he will have his annual blood tests and will post the results.
He will be 85 in May and takes no prescribed medications. One is never too old to start improving your health.
