From Depoe Bay to Lincoln City is 15 minutes.

No shellfish license is required to attend the Free Crab Clinic, but a license is required for those 12 or older to catch crabs. For an Annual Shellfish License ($10 for Oregon Residences, $28 for out-of-state,$20 for three (3) days out-of-state),

Why is the clinic scheduled so early?

Blame the tides. It is scheduled so you can go crabbing after the Clinic, and the Tides will be the best for you.

If this time does not work, a Private Crab Clinic can be scheduled at your time and date. The number of attendees to the Clinic is not limited, but there is a cost of $25.

Importance of soft-shell Crab vs hard-shell crabs

The main difference between soft-shell and hard-shell crabs is their stage of maturity. Soft-shell crabs are caught right after molting when their shells are still soft and pliable, while hard-shell crabs are fully grown and have a hard outer shell. One gets 12%-15% more meat with a hard shell crab, but the meat is the same.

If you catch your crab during the month whose name ends with the letter “R,” they will nearly all have a hard shell. This is why they say the best time for crabs is fall.

In terms of cooking, soft-shell crabs can be eaten whole, while hard-shell crabs need to be cracked open to access the meat. Soft-shell crabs are often breaded and fried, while hard-shell crabs can be cooked in various ways, such as steaming, boiling, or baking.

In terms of taste and texture, soft-shell crabs are known for their tender and delicate meat, while hard-shell crabs have a firmer texture. However, both crabs have a sweet and briny flavor that seafood lovers love.

The best time to crab is when the water is not moving and has not been raining upstream.

NO fRESH WATER ….. When it rains upstream, the bays fill with fresh water, and the crabs retreat to the salty ocean since they are saltwater creatures. During the summer, we can go for 90 days without rain. Then, anytime is a good time to crab in the bays.
