Location … Location … Location ... It is that may in real estate, and it is that way in Crabbing.
If you want Dungeness crabs, you want a sandy or muddy bottom. Stay away from sandy locations near rocks, or you will attract rock crabs. All docks have a lot of rocks around them. Some people think the crabs go into the rocks in stormy weather. During storms, we have found; the Dungeness dig into the sand or mud and wait out the storm.
Another Crabber tip if you can find a sandy/muddy spot with a good drop-off set up on the high place, the crabs will follow the slops, so they quickly move in but not out.
Type of Crab Traps we use.
Danielson Crab Trap….. is a “SOAKER” type of Crab Trap. Meaning you pull the trap after it has soaked for an hour or so. It is 2 ft by 2 ft by 1 ft. Danielson works by using the Crab’s instincts to trap itself. It lures the Crab with a bait bag into the large cage through strategically placed openings that they can enter but cannot escape.
Crab Trapper ….. is a “QUICK PULL” type of Crab Trap. Meaning you pull the trap after it has soaked for 5 or 6 minutes. It consists of two metal netted 24-inch sides. When lying flat, it takes sort of the shape of a 24-inch circle. When pulled, it acts like a clamshell and captures the Crab.
The type of Crab caught depends on the kind of bottom of the Bay. Rock Crab like bays with a rocky bottom. Dungeness Crab likes sandy bay bottoms with ell grass. If the Bay has a rocky and sandy bottom; thus, you will catch Rock and Dungeness Crab.
Know where these “drop holes” is a key to productive Crabbing
