Siletz Bay has Crabs!!!!

Dean, one of the Concierges, on Friday, August 3, at high tide, went crabbing with a Soaker Crab Trap.  He set the trap on the west side near the Hwy 101 Siletz River bridge for three hours.  This is the picture he took.

When he pulled the trap, he had 25 crabs and 12 keepers.

Now ….. he is eating and canning crab

PS.  Dean has not had good luck recently.  Now, the rains have come, and the fresh water in the Siletz River is causing the crabs to stay closer to the ocean. 

He is only getting one or two keepers per pull. ………………………..

There are two types of Crab Traps

Quick Pull Crab Traps (Known as Crab Max)

These Traps mean you have to continually pull the crab max or ring every 5 – 10/15 minutes to snare the crabs. There is no advantage to leaving your ring or pot overnight. This type of Crabbing is usually done from a dock or shore and sometimes a boat.

Quick Pull Crab Trap consists of two metal netted 18″ triangular sides. When lying flat, it takes the shape of a square 18″ X 18″. It is the only Crab Trap that can be used from the shore or Kayak. Since is the smallest of the traps, it is excellent for children to use.

When pulled, the two sides lift up, creating walls and pushing all the crabs to the center.

Gloves ….You may want a pair of gloves to protect your fingers.  These prevent jellyfish stings from tentacles wrapped around your rope, along with alleviating some of the pain that comes with handling crabs.

 Justin Ainsworth, a shellfish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said timing your crabbing trip in the fall is more important to success than figuring out which bay to try. Most bays will be primed with crabs in the latter part of the calendar year, with late September through November usually the very best.

The Siletz Bay at the south edge of Lincoln City is the best-kept crabbing secret on Oregon Coast.   Siletz Bay is a Virgin spot for crabbing.

• Crabs live in the ocean with new Crabs introduced into the Siletz Bay at High Tide.
• The Siletz Bay Federal Refuge is marsh land, and is only navigable during High Tide

Best Launch Times

We only rent at the times listed since our location is where the Siletz River flows into the Siletz Bay and the Pacific Ocean; therefore, the tides directly affect the crabbing.  The following are the best times to launch to get into the Bay for High Slate Tide.  Chick Here to find the next launch time or Call 541-765-2109 for Best launch Time.

Setting your traps and soak time

Set crab traps an adequate space apart from each other so that you aren’t competing against your own gear.

For Soaker Crab Traps allow between 60 -90 minutes before retrieving your traps.

Locate your float and approach slowly. Grab crab line just below the float with your hand.

Quickly sort through crab, being careful to not break crab legs or get your fingers pinched.

An experienced crab handler will sort crabs by keeping them at ease. They want to get out, but they don’t want to be forcefully grabbed.

A quick shake of the trap is often more effective than reaching directly for them.

Learn the difference between male and female crab.  With a crab gauge measure all male Dungeness crab.  Only retain the male Dungeness crab that is 5 ¾” inches across the back (NOT including the spines) or wider.  When measuring make sure you measure in a straight line across the back immediately in front of, but NOT including the last points.  Store legally sized “Keeper” crabs in a 5-gallon bucket with water.

If you keep your crabs in the bucket with water, make sure to change the water frequently to keep the water cool and oxygenated

Releasing “soft shell” crab is strongly recommended. Soft-shelled crab are newly molted and are essentially a small crab in a big crabs body.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the day’s weather. Quick-drying synthetic fabrics and comfortable footwear that can get wet are best. Having rain gear is always advisable.

We recommend a water bottle and an extra layer for warmth and don’t forget the camera.
