You can Crab from a kayak – Let us show you how
While kayak crabbing is very different than kayak fishing it can be done from a kayak. The problem with crabbing from a Kayak is space. You do not have a lot of room to catch, process, and store the crab. To solve this problem we have developed a Crab Trap that can be handled in a kayak. We also have a solution to the space problem.
Set out Crab Traps
We use the Crab Trapper Traps specifically designed to enable you to catch your own Dungeness crab from a kayak and not turn your kayak over. A “SOAKER” Crab Trap is big 2 ft by 2 ft by 1 ft. (see picture below) If you are not a very experienced kayaker, it can turn you over when you try to pull up a trap full of Crab. To prevent this we have developed a small “QUICK PULL” Crab Trap.
We use “QUICK PULL” Crab Traps and a floating Crab Storage Unit to make it easy for any kayaker to Crab and not turn themselves over and catch plenty of Crabs.
Oregon Crab License = $10 ……………….. Out of State Crab License = $28
Quick Pull Crab Trap consists of two metal netted 18″ triangular sides. When lying flat, it takes the shape of a square 18″ X 18″. It is a Crab Trap that is easy to use from a Kayak.
When pulled, the two sides lift up, creating walls and pushing all the crabs to the center.
Therefore …. to insure the best Oregon experience we only launch once a day one hour before High Tide.

Siletz Bay has Dungeness Crabs!!!!
Ninety eight per-cent (98%) caught in Siletz Bay are Dungeness Crabs. Why Siletz Bay is has a sandy bottom with ell grass.
Dean, one the of the Kayak Concierges on Friday, August 3, 2018, at high tide went crabbing with a Crab Trap for the first time this season. He set the ap on the west side near the Hwy 101 Siletz River bridge for two hours.
When he pulled the trap, he had 25 crabs and 12 keepers.
Now ….. he is eating crab.
PS. Dean has not had good luck recently. When the fall rains come, he is only getting one or two keeper per pull. ……………………….. Office open noon-9PM daily 541-765-2019
We only rent at the times listed since our location is where the Siletz River flows into the Siletz Bay and the Pacific Ocean; therefore, the tides directly affect the crabbing. The following are the best times to launch to get into the Bay for High Slate Tide. Chick Here to find the next launch time or Call 541-765-2109 for Best launch Time
Many different types of meat are used for crab baits. We use what Crabs normally eat, dead fish.
Try and allow between 10 -15 minutes before retrieving your traps.
Locate your float and approach slowly. Grab crab line just below the float with your hand.
Quickly sort through crab, being careful to not break crab legs or get your fingers pinched.
An experienced crab handler will sort crabs by keeping them at ease. They want to get out, but they don’t want to be forcefully grabbed.
A quick shake of the trap is often more effective than reaching directly for them.
Learn the difference between male and female crab. With a crab gauge measure all male Dungeness crab. Only retain the male Dungeness crab that is 5 ¾” inches across the back (NOT including the spines) or wider. When measuring make sure you measure in a straight line across the back immediately in front of, but NOT including the last points. Store legally sized “Keeper” crabs in a 5-gallon bucket with water.
If you keep your crabs in the bucket with water make sure to change the water frequently to keep the water cool and oxygenated
Releasing “soft shell” crab is strongly recommended. Soft-shelled crab are newly molted and are essentially a small crab in a big crabs body.
